Introduction

Teachers, school administrators and school psychologist positions are advertised on the JobsWA website.

The JobsWA website allows you to:

  • apply for central placement
  • apply directly to local selection schools, including Independent Public Schools
  • search more easily for relevant positions
  • set up a job seeker account and receive job alerts via email
  • store your information to make it easier to apply for multiple positions.

There are two ways to apply for a teaching position with the Department. You can apply through Central Placement and/or apply directly to schools that conduct a Local Selection process. You are encouraged to apply using both methods.

Central Placement for teachers

Central Placement allows you to nominate multiple schools and geographic locations where you would like to teach. You can also indicate preferences for subjects and year groups. The Department will attempt to match your preferences to any suitable vacancies in the schools you have nominated. You apply to a teaching pool through JobsWA.

If you are a graduate teacher (less than two years of teaching experience) apply to the ’Graduate Teacher’ pool. To find the pool information enter the words ‘Graduate Teacher’ in the ‘position number or keywords box’ then click ‘search’.

If you are an experienced teacher (with two years or more of teaching experience) apply to the ‘Teacher Vacancies’ pool. To find the pool information enter the words ‘Teacher Vacancies’ in the ‘position number or keywords box’ then click ‘search’.

After you have applied to the pool you will be contacted with instructions on how to complete the Central Placement process.

You are encouraged to apply widely in terms of location to increase your chances of gaining a position.

If you are a teacher with previous experience but have not taught in an Australian school in the past 10 years find out about our Entry and Orientation program.

Local Selection

Public schools that choose to select their own staff through a Local Selection process do so by listing their advertised teacher vacancies on JobsWA. This includes Independent Public Schools (IPS).

Independent Public Schools are part of the public school system, with more flexibility to set their own strategic direction and authority for day to day decisions. IPS include primary schools, secondary schools, senior colleges, district high schools and education support centres.

You can only apply directly to schools that have advertised vacant positions. When you apply for these positions you need to attach your CV and a covering letter.

To assist you in preparing your local selection job application, the same five selection criteria are generally used in each teaching advertisement, so you have the opportunity to work on these criteria before applying.

The five selection criteria are:

  • ability to provide purposeful and relevant learning experiences that cater for different student learning needs as outlined in the Curriculum Framework
  • ability to use a range of assessment and reporting methods that show student achievement in relation to learning outcomes
  • commitment to plan and engage in professional learning activities that support school and systemic priorities
  • high-level support and participation in team planning for curriculum policy and programs
  • collaboration with members of the school community building a team environment that supports student learning.

JobsWA provides tips and helpful hints and the Institute for Professional Learning provides an online Application Writing for Teachers course to assist you complete your application.

Please note that you do not require an employee identification number prior to applying through a local selection process. The principal will assist with this if you are the recommended applicant. We would, however, encourage you to apply in advance to prevent any unforseen delays.

To work as a school psychologist you must be registered or provisionally registered with the Psychology Board of Australia.
