Introduction

You have already chosen a career that is highly regarded by the community and where you will make a difference in the lives of young people everyday.

If you are flexible and open to teaching statewide you may be eligible for a final year teaching scholarship where you will:

  • be guaranteed full-time employment in a rural public school at the start of the 2014 school year; and
  • receive up to $30 000* (less tax) to support your studies and to help you get started in your career.

How much you receive will depend on whether you commit to teach for one or two years after you graduate.

*Note:  Scholarship payments are considered taxable income.  Please seek advice from the Australian Taxation Office or a financial advisor before applying.

If you receive Centrelink payments these may also be affected so, if successful, please check with Centrelink.

In what teaching areas are scholarships available?

Final year scholarships are available in a number of teaching areas.  Each year this list may change depending on the demand for particular school year levels or subject areas of need.

You can apply for a scholarship in 2013 in the following catagories:

  • Secondary teachers in:
    • mathematics (major)
    • science (physics and chemistry)
    • design and technology (woodwork, metalwork and automotive)
  • Primary or secondary teachers in special needs (education support).

Who can apply?

This opportunity is available for people going into their final year of a teaching qualification such as a Bachelor of Education or Graduate Diploma of Education in 2013.

To be eligible to apply you must be:

  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen
  • studying to become a teacher in a Western Australian university in 2013
  • available to teach full-time from the start of the 2014 school year
  • available to teach statewide in a public school.

What are the conditions of this scholarship?

  • You will receive a maximum of $30 000* (less tax).  Half the amount is paid fortnightly while you study and the balance is paid as a lump sum on completion of your contract.
  • The longer your contract, the greater the value of the scholarship.
  • As part of the scholarship you will be required to sign a contract with the Department of Education to teach full-time from the start of the 2014 school year.
  • Scholarship holders must be available for appointment statewide on completion of their studies.
  • Scholarships are available for:
    • Secondary teachers in:
      • mathematics (major)
      • science (physics and chemistry)
      • design and technology (woodwork, metalwork and automotive)
    • Primary or secondary teachers in special needs (education support).

How to apply?

  1. Print the Final Year Teaching Scholarship Application form.
  2. Select which teaching area you are applying for and complete the application form.
  3. Attach all necessary documents to your application form.  You need to include:
    • a copy of your resume including employment positions and/or any other activities which can support your application (such as membership/s with community groups, hobbies or voluntary work)
    • one written reference from your current or most recent university supervisor (such as a sub-dean, lecturer or tutor) or your current employer, supporting your application and confirming you will be eligible to enter the final year of a teaching course in 2013
    • academic transcripts of all current completed studies
    • practicum reports for any teaching practicums completed to date
    • evidence of your Australian citizenship or permanent residency, or New Zealand citizenship.
  4. Ensure you complete the 'application receipt' at the bottom of your application form.  This will be posted to you as confirmation of receipt of your application.

Closing date

Applications close Monday, 4 February 2013.

  • receive up to $15 000* (less tax) to support your studies and to help you get started in your career.

$15 000 for a one year contract

Secondary teachers in:

  • mathematics (major)
  • science (physics and chemistry majors)
  • design and technology (woodwork, metalwork and automotive)

Primary or secondary teachers in special needs (education support).

Who can apply?

There may be scholarship opportunities available for people going into their final year of a teaching qualification through the following programs:

  • Edith Cowan University Teacher Residency Program
  • Combined Universities Training Schools Program
    (Murdoch, UWA and Curtin).

To be eligible to apply you must also be:

  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen
  • studying to become a teacher in a Western Australian university
  • available to teach full-time from the start of the 2014 school year
  • available to teach statewide, in a public school.

What are the conditions of this scholarship?

  • You will receive a maximum of $15 000* (less tax). This amount is paid fortnightly while you study.

  • Scholarships will only be awarded to students with a major in one of the listed scholarship subject areas.
