The Disability Standards for Education 2005

The Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Standards) are subordinate legislation made under the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) (the Act).

The Act makes it unlawful to discriminate on the basis of disability in the area of education. The Standards provide information and guidance for education providers about the rights of students with disability and their families as well as their obligations under the Act.

The Rights of Students and the Responsibilities of Education Providers

To assist with the 2010 Review of the Disability Standards for Education 2005, an overview of the rights of students and the responsibilities of education providers was developed: The Rights of Students and the Responsibilities of Education Providers.

The review of the Disability Standards for Education 2015

The Minister for Education and Training, in consultation with the Attorney-General, is required to conduct an independent review of the effectiveness of the Disability Standards for Education every five years.

The Standards came into effect in August 2005. The first review occurred in 2010 - The Review of Disability Standards for Education 2005:

The 2015 review of the Standards is occurring simultaneously with reviews of the More Support For Students with Disability initiative (MSSD) and the Disability Support Program (DSP).
