Badged Attendance Officers

Badged Attendance Officers have specific powers, in accordance with the School Education Act 1999, which enable them to perform attendance duties away from the school site in the community.

A Badged Attendance Officer may stop and detain any person they believe to be an absent student and enter public premises without paying the charge, if any, for the purpose of checking whether any absent students are on the premises.

Schools and networks may choose to designate staff to take on these additional duties. Schools and networks may designate principals, deputy principals, student service managers, Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEOs), school psychologists, youth workers and teachers as Badged Attendance Officers.

Principals and Regional Executive Directors have delegated responsibility on behalf of the Minister for Education to designate Badged Attendance Officers in accordance with Sections 12 and 33 of the Act.

Staff employed by an external agency, such as Clontarf Football Academy staff or School Chaplains, cannot be designated by Regional Executive Directors or Independent Public School principals to be Badged Attendance Officers.

A Certificate of Authorisation, Certificate of Designation and an identification badge in the form prescribed by the School Education Regulations 2000 (Section 23), must be carried by the Badged Attendance Officer whilst performing duties and be produced on request.

How to designate a Badged Attendance Officer
