Engagement and attendance

The Department of Education aims to improve attendance of students in public schools by providing direct support to those students in greatest need. The Department’s approach is based on the mutual obligation of schools, parents and communities to develop strategies that link directly to the local causes of student absence.

Recent research clearly shows the need to engage students and establish positive attendance behaviours in the early years of schooling; to support student attendance at transition points and to raise parent and community awareness of the fact that, where academic achievement is concerned, every day counts.

The Department utilises existing data sources of student outcomes, such as NAPLAN, and overlays these with individual student attendance rates, schools can access this data through the Student Achievement Information System (SAIS). Schools now have several options to access detailed information regarding student engagement and attendance including Schools Online and Student Attendance Reporting (SAR) . Schools will use these sources to plan for attendance improvement and monitor the effectiveness of the strategies they adopt. Strong accountability for attendance continues to be required at all levels.

Attendance concerns are best managed by whole school planning for student engagement, early identification and intervention.
