Disability standards for education
Disability standards for education were formulated under the disability discrimination act 1992 and tabled in the parliament on 17 march 2005. They came into effect on the 18th august 2005 following a period of fifteen parliamentary sitting days. The standards clarify the obligations of education and training providers to ensure that students with disabilities are able to access and participate in education without experiencing discrimination.

Education support package
The education support package was developed in the mid 1990’s and may be relevant and useful for teachers in all school settings. The package includes chapters on individual education plans, teaching adjustments and classroom management, along with links to sources of help and a glossary of commonly used terms. Please note: the education support package will need to be reviewed in light of the curriculum framework, revised outcome and standards framework and curriculum guides.

Towards informed practice – the effective use of education assistants
As part of the review of educational services for students with disabilities in government schools, professor loretta giorcelli (university of western sydney) provided a number of workshops for senior personnel within the department of education and training and assisted in initial workshops to promote the building inclusive schools initiative.

Professor giorcelli has worked collaboratively with professor michael giangreco (university of vermont) who has done some work in encouraging informed practice in relation to the use of education assistants (termed para-professionals in the us) in schools.
