The Department conducts a student census at the beginning of each semester. Census is the broad term used for the coordinated collection of various data at a particular point in time. The census data includes details and statistics related to public and independent public schools, students and staff with school and student data gained from non-government schools.

The first semester collection is held at the end of the second full week of Term 1 and the second semester collection is held on the first Friday in August.

The two collections provide essential data for the monitoring and provision of educational programs, services and various related activities within the State.

Student census data is used to calculate resource allocations for schools, including FTE allocation. A list of student characteristics which attract resourcing is located in the Funded Students tab in the online Student Census system. This student enrolment information will then be used to calculate FTE allocation for teaching and some categories of school support staff.
