Rising Leaders

About the program

Rising Leaders is designed to enhance women’s knowledge of, and confidence in, their own leadership capabilities and provide learning opportunities that contribute to personal and professional growth.

The program will cover:

  • PRINT diagnostic
  • Being an authentic leader
  • Closing the confidence gap
  • Building your personal brand
  • Mindfully maintaining wellbeing
  • Cultivating grit and grace
  • Mindfully maintaining wellbeing.

The program is structured as three consecutive days and one later day, with group coaching sessions.

In 2017, the Department is offering 24 partially funded places in Rising Leaders.

Learning intention

By the end of this program, participants will have:

  • improved confidence in their own leadership style and capacity
  • increased leadership capacity in current workplaces
  • access to coaching and mentoring.  

Success criteria

As a result of this program participants will be able to:

  • raise their profile and potential within the system
  • more confidently seek promotional positions, including secondments
  • increase their networking opportunities and skills.

Participant expectations

Participants commit to:

  • all elements of the program
  • seeking the support and involvement of a sponsor
  • spaced evaluations of the program.

About the facilitators

Judy McGinn is a professional leadership coach, counsellor, trainer and education consultant with more than 35 years’ experience in the human services and personal development industry. Before relocating to Perth, Judy was based in the Kimberley for 16 years, where she held positions in management, consultancy, counselling and education with the Department for Child Protection and the Department of Education.

Jenny Cole is an accredited coach and experienced facilitator. She focuses on achieving positive results for individuals and assisting clients to achieve personal and organisational goals. Before becoming a coach and facilitator, Jenny’s career was is teaching and school leadership. She has worked extensively with leaders, teachers and corporate teams across Australia, challenging people to be their very best within safe, yet stimulating environments.

Rising Leaders is aligned with the following Australian Professional Standard for Principals key leadership requirements and professional practices:

  • Personal qualities, social and interpersonal skills

  • Leading improvement, innovation and change
  • Leading the management of the school

Apply for a Department partially funded place – applications closed

The cost per person is $600.

This program has been significantly subsidised by the Department of Education.


Eligibility to apply for a Department partially funded place

Applications for a Department partially funded place in the 2017 program are open to:

  • Level 3 and above (Education Act)
  • Level 6 and above (Public Service Award).

Applicants must be willing to:

  • commit to all elements of the program
  • gain endorsement/sponsorship from their line manager
  • confirm support from their line manager for travel, time away from work and other activities/events that impact on the workplace.

Selection process

A panel will select the successful applicants on the basis of merit, eligibility requirements and sponsor feedback, as required. All applicants will receive written notification of the panel’s decision.


Travel and accommodation costs

Regional participants are eligible for travel and accommodation assistance. Participants will be required to organise and pay for their travel and accommodation. Reimbursement can be claimed through HRMIS, as per Department guidelines.

On the day

  • Programs start at 8.30am. Tea and coffee are available from 7.45am.
  • Business dress is required.
  • Morning tea and lunch are provided.
  • Wifi connection is available.

Please note the Institute does not have on-site parking available:

  • The City of Vincent has a number of car parks throughout Leederville.
  • The closest long term paid parking is available on the south side of The Avenue Car Park on Leederville Parade.
  • Short term paid parking (two hour) is available in adjacent streets.
  • The City of Vincent offers a 'pay by phone' parking service.
  • The Institute is a two minute walk from Leederville train station.
  • Taxis service the site promptly.
  • Cycle racks are located outside Building F at the Institute.
