Application Writing and Interview Skills for Emerging Leaders (Regional Program)


About the program

Winning a leadership position requires you to become reader centric when developing your written application. During this program learn how to plan and present information to reflect the context of your school community including your capability and capacity to deliver educational outcomes for 21st century learners.

This program provides the opportunity to refine written application skills and build on that foundation to shape and improve interview performance in the range of situations you may experience.  

The focus of this program is to support emerging leaders (ie: classroom teachers and teacher leaders) to move into school leadership roles.

Learning intention

By the end of the program, it is intended that you will have:

  • identified the key influences impacting on successful career progression through the application process
  • examined application requirements for varying promotional positions
  • explored how to communicate competitiveness through a covering letter and CV
  • explored the required work related requirements/standards/criteria in the context of a position
  • considered effective formats for developing a covering letter and CV
  • explored strategies and techniques for shaping and improving interview performance.

Participant expectations

You are requested to bring your current applications and job descriptions to refer to during the session.

Target audience

Middle leaders, emerging leaders, aspiring principals and teachers aspiring to move into school leadership roles.

About the facilitator

Facilitator, Vanessa HerbertVanessa Herbert has worked as a facilitator, trainer and consultant for the past 25 years in the public and private sectors. This includes working in organisational change, to facilitate team planning, decision-making and review. She is skilled in engaging participants in collaborative work to support them exploring changing and demanding workplace expectations.

With extensive experience training in core competency areas, including leadership, management, strategic and operational planning, curriculum, communications and performance development, Vanessa is able to support participants to develop their capability and capacity to perform skilfully in their roles.

For the past five years, Vanessa has delivered a broad range of customised training developing business writing skills in the public and private sectors. This has ranged from developing corporate executive papers and proposals to ministerial responses.
