Leading School Improvement in a Special Education Need Context

About the program

Leading School Improvement in a Special Education Need Context is designed for principals and the leadership team in a special education need setting.

Using the latest research, principals and their leadership team will have the opportunity to strengthen their work relating to leading whole school improvement and building on their current practice, which impacts on every classroom and every student. 

Leading School Improvement is based on current research about educational change and effective schools. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their current practice, develop plans for their school context and maximise resources and expertise within their school to have a positive effect in the classroom. A goal of this program is to help build a cohesive, high-functioning team that will have a positive effect on the school. 

The program comprises four modules:

Module 1 – Preconditions for whole school improvement
Module 2 – Identifying the Need for Change
Module 3 – Planning to Make a Difference
Module 4 – A culture of sustainable change

The modules are sequential, cumulative and lay the foundations for improving the performance of schools. They will be conducted over four days.  The first two days will be consecutive, followed two stand-alone days. 

Learning intention

By the end of this program, it is expected participants will be able to:

  • understanding the preconditions for school improvement
  • considering your own context and potential for improvement
  • reviewing research about educational change and highly effective schools
  • identifying common elements of highly effective teams to meet the improvement challenge
  • understanding your role in leading school improvement
  • reflecting on personal effectiveness in leading change.

Target audience

Principals and their leadership team in a special education needs setting.

Participant expectations

By participating in this course, participants commit to:‚Äč

  • completing the pre-module readings and between module tasks
  • completing evaluations of the program.

On the day

  • Programs start at 8.30am. (Institute doors open at 8.00am.)
  • Business dress is required.
  • Morning tea and lunch are provided.


The Leadership Institute is located in Building B at 164-194 Oxford Street, Leederville. We co-locate with the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE).


Please note, the Institute does not have on-site parking:

  • The City of Vincent has a number of car parks throughout Leederville.
  • The closest long term paid parking is available on the south side of The Avenue Car Park on Leederville Parade.
  • Short term paid parking (two hour) is available in adjacent streets.
  • The City of Vincent offers a 'pay by phone' parking service.
  • The Institute is a two minute walk from Leederville train station.
  • Taxis service the site promptly.
  • Cycle racks are located outside Building F.
