The Art of Secondary School Timetabling

About the program

The Art of Secondary School Timetabling is open to secondary school staff who have not previously developed a timetable. Highly experienced secondary school timetablers step participants through the process of how they plan, construct and implement an annual secondary school timetable from the basic to the complex. Participants discuss and learn the best approaches in managing learning area constraints.

Learning intentions

By the end of this program, it is intended participants will:

  • have an understanding of the process for constructing a secondary school timetable that accounts for school priorities and works within constraints
  • feel more confident to progress to a school leader role with timetabling responsibilities
  • establish a network of other secondary school leaders working through similar timetabling learning needs.

Target audience

This program is open to secondary school staff who have not timetabled before, or who are in the early stages of learning.

Participants looking for training using the Student Information System to construct a timetable can access SIS training through the STIMS team in Central Office.  The Art of Secondary School Timetabling does not focus on software training.

Participant expectations

Participants are asked to have an understanding of the parameters of their current timetable including student cohort numbers, room availability and staff variables.

About the facilitators

Evan Floyd, Deputy Principal at Melville Senior High School, has timetabling experience in MAZE and SIS, delivering a responsive and effective timetable solution for a diverse range of students in several schools. With more than1400 students in a comprehensive school with the added complexities of an Intensive English Centre and selective entry programs, Evan has plenty of opportunity for creative timetabling.

Sharon Lyon, Deputy Principal at Ashdale Secondary College, moved into the timetabling portfolio in 2014. Her innovative approach and creative thinking has ensured students at the college are offered the widest variety of courses, helping pave their way to success.

Marisa Del Pin, Associate Principal at Warwick Senior High School, has served as a school leader with timetabling responsibility in metropolitan and regional Western Australian public schools. Marisa leads the development of the timetable in her school, ensuring all students have pathways for success.
