Outline of scholarship

The Anika Foundation has generously donated funds to the Young Lives Matter Foundation at The University of Western Australia (YLM) to facilitate the Anika Foundation Youth Depression Awareness Scholarship for Western Australia. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and assist an individual currently working with secondary school aged students to undertake a study program focused on improving their understanding of youth mental health and depression. This scholarship is offered by YLM in partnership with the Department of Education.

1. Who is eligible to apply?

Staff currently working with secondary school aged students at risk of depression including:

  • teachers
  • school psychologists
  • student services personnel
  • principals and deputy principals
  • school chaplains.

2. What should applications focus on?

Applications should focus on preventing depression in young people or building awareness of youth depression. Applicants may include strategies for dealing with, or referring on, young people who may be suffering from depression. Applications with a focus on indigenous students are particularly welcome although the scholarship is open to all staff in Western Australia.

A previous scholarship winner submitted a proposal which focused on youth depression and suicide awareness in rural and remote Western Australia.  The study tour aimed to investigate programs that up skills teachers and enables them to build confidence in helping students at risk.

Another scholarship winner investigated how schools in Western Australia can use existing, evidence based models for whole school screening, for early and targeted intervention for students with mental health disorders, including depression.  The winner attended the Association for Positive Behavioural Support Conference in the United States as well as visiting schools there who are implementing depression awareness strategies in their classrooms.

3. What does the scholarship give me?

The $15 000 scholarship is for (up to) a four week study program in Australia or overseas. Time need not all be spent in formal study but may involve a program of visits to schools and institutions to conduct interviews, observe exemplary practices and collect resources for preparing teaching materials related to a specific aspect of youth depression awareness. The study program must be completed within 12 months of being awarded and a further three months for report submission.

4. What entitlements do I get?

A teacher or school psychologist in a public school is entitled to leave and the school is entitled to staff relief. A teacher or school psychologist in a non-government school needs to negotiate leave with the employing authority.

5. How do I apply?

You must fill out the application form and submit a written application of no more than 1000 words against the selection criteria. You may attach supporting documentation.

6. How is the scholarship recipient determined?

A judging panel evaluates each application based on the written application against the selection criteria.

7. What happens after the study program?

Within 90 days of the completion of the study program, you must submit a report of approximately 3000 words to the Minister for Education through the Department of Education's Leadership Institute. This report must include strategies which demonstrate the best practices learnt through the study program and how these practices could be used in Western Australian schools.

8. When do applications close?

Applications must be received by 4.00pm Friday, 11 October 2019.

9. When will I be notified of the outcome of my application?

All applications are acknowledged in writing. The winner will be notified in November 2019.

1. Rationale (worth 10 points)

Purpose: For the selection panel to have a clear understanding of what aspect (or aspects) of mental health and youth depression awareness will be the subject of your study including your understanding and experience with that aspect (those aspects).

Guidance: Your study must focus on preventing depression in young people or building awareness of youth depression. You should demonstrate your understanding of, and experience in, your chosen topic.

Does your proposed study program:

  • have a clearly identified statement of what aspect (or aspects) relating to youth depression awareness your study relates to?

  • demonstrate knowledge of current relevant research and practice related to your study proposal?

  • show evidence of prior work already undertaken in this area and connections to existing agencies?

  • show evidence of your prior experience or interest in the proposed aspect of youth depression awareness through activities you have already conducted?

  • include a clear connection to high quality teaching and learning for students at risk of youth depression?

2. Focus: Curriculum/course relationship (worth 10 points)

Purpose: For the selection panel to have a clear understanding of how your study relates to the teaching of resilience to students at risk of depression.

Guidance: The outcome of your study must be able to be implemented through the teaching and learning environment.

Does your proposed study program have:

  • potential to have a positive impact on students at risk of youth depression?

  • an obvious connection to the teaching of resilience?

  • relevance to high quality teaching and learning and the mental health and wellbeing of students in Western Australia?

3. Scope and feasibility (worth 10 points)

Purpose: For the selection panel to have an understanding of the scope of your proposed study and how it will be undertaken including preparatory work and research you have undertaken to this point, broad itinerary and costings for your study.

Guidance: You need to demonstrate you have undertaken a significant degree of initial research into, and planning, your itinerary.

Does your proposed study program have:

  • evidence of preliminary preparation (e.g. reference to the literature, identification of and if possible contact with experts in the field/key institutions, conference/course opportunities)?

  • draft budget including realistic estimates of costs associated with travel, accommodation, an allowance of a $2500 in the budget for dissemination and conference registration?

  • draft study program itinerary including details of proposed conferences, forums, meetings and visits?

4. Outcomes and benefits (worth 10 points)

Purpose: For the selection panel to understand how the outcome for your study will be applied to the teaching and learning of students at risk of youth depression; and benefit you and other staff, and students in Western Australian schools.

Guidance: The outcomes of your study must add to the general body of knowledge in Western Australian schools about youth depression and awareness; and be able to be shared with other staff, and students throughout Western Australia. The selection panel is keen to understand how you would disseminate results of your study as widely as possible within the Western Australian teaching and student population.

How will the proposed study:

  • be disseminated to improve learning and teaching beyond your school (e.g. through the education system, professional associations, conferences, networks)?

  • enrich the body of professional knowledge?

  • contribute to improving student wellbeing learning outcomes?

  • contribute to your own professional learning?

  • impact on learning and teaching beyond an individual school?
