Entry and Orientation Program

About the program

The Entry and Orientation Program is designed to support teachers: returning to teaching and from other states and overseas. This program familiarises participants with current best practice in Western Australian public schools.

Qualified teachers from overseas and other states of Australia, and those with previous experience teaching in Western Australia but have not taught for a number of years are eligible to enrol.


Learning intention

Participants will develop an understanding of current best practice in Western Australian public schools.


Success criteria

Participants will gain a better understanding of:

  • working for the Department of Education and the benefits of teaching in the Western Australian public school system
  • effective practice in classroom management, instructional strategies and skills
  • using data to inform planning
  • evidencing the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and maintaining teacher registration
  • planning for a differentiated curriculum.

Who will benefit?

Teachers returning to teaching in Western Australia after a period of time and qualified teachers from overseas and other states of Australia, are eligible to enrol.


Participant expectations

By participating in this program, participants will commit to:

  • actively engaging in all activities
  • completing all tasks
  • completing evaluations of the program.

Participants completing this program receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Consultants from a variety of Department of Education business units facilitate the sessions.

On the day

For all programs held at the Institute for Professional Learning:

  • Programs start at 8.30am. Tea and coffee are available from 7.45am.
  • Business dress is required.
  • Morning tea and lunch are provided.
  • Wifi connection is available.


The Institute for Professional Learning is located in Building B at 164-194 Oxford Street, Leederville WA. We co-locate with the Schools of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE).



Please note, the Institute does not have on-site parking:

  • The City of Vincent has a number of car parks throughout Leederville.
  • The closest long term paid parking is available on the south side of The Avenue Car Park on Leederville Parade.
  • Short term paid parking (two hour) is available in adjacent streets.
  • The City of Vincent offers a 'pay by phone' parking service.
  • The Institute is a two minute walk from Leederville train station.
  • Taxis service the site promptly.
  • Cycle racks are located outside Building F.

How to enrol

Department of Education employees

Non-Department of Education employees

To register for the Entry and Orientation Program, please complete the Entry and Orientation Registration and Payment form and email to

You will receive an email confirming your place. Enrolments close seven days before the session, and each session has a limited number of places. We encourage you to enrol early to be sure of getting the session of your choice.

If you are unable to attend please let us know as soon as possible so your place can be made available to someone else.
