Verbal Judo for Individuals

About the program

Verbal judo is an invaluable life skill, and with practice, the principles and techniques not only enhance the participant’s ability to always perform professionally under pressure, but can assist them with developing their personal and professional relationships. Verbal Judo for Individuals is ideal for anyone who has direct contact with students, parents, work colleagues and the community in emotionally charged and difficult situations. It gives participants the advantage of knowing what to say, how to say it and why it works.

Learning intention

Verbal Judo for Individuals is tactical communication training for staff that redirects the behaviour of others with words that generate voluntary compliance. The program teaches how to treat people with respect, how to stay calm and professionally handle verbal resistance and abuse, and therefore reduce conflict. Implementing the skills and strategies in the workplace will increase the safety and professionalism of every encounter in the school environment.

Success criteria

By the end of this workshop participants will understand:

  • the goal of persuasion and professional discourse
  • how to read people
  • how to professionally handle verbal abuse
  • delivery style = 93% (success or failure)
  • the five step ‘Hard Style’ technique to overcome verbal resistance
  • the four appeals of persuasion
  • the management of self.

Who will benefit?

This program teaches participants how to perform professionally under all conditions whether it be with students, parents, community members or colleagues.

Line managers should attend the two day Verbal Judo for Leaders, which includes advanced material that will assist in the often difficult role of overseeing the performance of others.

Participant expectations

Participants will develop skills that can be implemented immediately in their professional role to help them make a direct impact on colleagues, staff, parents and students.
