Leading School Improvement for Secondary Team Leaders

About the program

Leading School Improvement for Secondary Team Leaders offers participants an opportunity to reflect on their current practice, what it means to effectively lead their own team and how to be a strong contributor to the whole school leadership team.

The program is based on current research and delivered over three spaced days. The modules are sequential, cumulative and lay the foundations for improving the performance of teams in schools. It is preferable at least two members of the same school attend the three days together.  

The program comprises four modules:

  • Module 1 - Building effective teams, change and your role as a school leader
  • Module 2 - Self-assessment  of performance  to determine the focus of change
  • Module 3 - Planning to make a difference: the alignment of team plans with the business plan
  • Module 4 - Converting planning into action in the classroom.

Learning intention

By the end of this program, it is intended participants will have a greater understanding of how to:

  • identify key conditions for sustainable change
  • reflect on their dual role and effectiveness in leading their team and being a school leader
  • consider characteristics of effective self-review and its role in determining the focus for change
  • identify how plans for school improvement can be implemented in the classroom
  • effectively lead their team to improve student outcomes
  • contribute to whole school leadership.                                                                      

Target audience

Secondary team leaders (eg HOLAs, Heads of Student Services, Co-ordinators Teaching and Learning and Lead Teachers).

Participant expectations

By participating in this course, participants commit to:‚Äč

  • completing the pre-module readings and between module tasks
  • completing evaluations of the course.

On the day

  • Programs start at 8.30am.
  • Business dress is required.
  • Morning tea and lunch are provided.


The Institute for Professional Learning is located in Building B at 164-194 Oxford Street, Leederville WA. We co-locate with the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE).


Please note, the Institute does not have on-site parking:

  • The City of Vincent has a number of car parks throughout Leederville.
  • The closest long term paid parking is available on the south side of The Avenue Car Park on Leederville Parade.
  • Short term paid parking (two hour) is available in adjacent streets.
  • The City of Vincent offers a 'pay by phone' parking service.
  • The Institute is a two minute walk from Leederville train station.
  • Taxis service the site promptly.
  • Cycle racks are located outside Building F.
