Leading School Improvement for Primary Team Leaders

About the program

Leading School Improvement for Primary School Team Leaders is designed for primary school team leaders (eg heads of learning area, SAER coordinators, teaching and learning coordinators, lead teachers).

It is based on current research and is delivered over three spaced days. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on current practice and what it means to effectively lead their own team and be a strong contributor to the whole school leadership team.

The program comprises four modules:

  • Module 1 - Building effective teams, change and your role as a school leader
  • Module 2 - Self-assessment of performance  to determine the focus of change
  • Module 3 - Planning to make a difference: the alignment of team plans with the business plan
  • Module 4 - Converting planning into action in the classroom

Learning intention

By the end of this program, it is intended participants will have a greater understanding of how to:

  • identify key conditions for sustainable change
  • reflect on their dual role and effectiveness in leading their team and being a school leader
  • consider characteristics of effective self-review and its role in determining the focus for change
  • identify how plans for school improvement can be implemented in the classroom
  • effectively lead their team to improve student outcomes
  • contribute to whole school leadership.                                      

Target audience

Primary school team leaders (eg learning area leaders, SAER coordinators, teaching and learning coordinators, lead teachers).

Participant expectations

By participating in this program, participants commit to:‚Äč

  • completing the pre-module readings and between module tasks
  • completing evaluations of the course.

On the day

  • Programs start at 8.30am. (Institute doors open at 8.00am.)
  • Business dress is required.
  • Morning tea and lunch are provided.


The Leadership Institute is located in Building B at 164-194 Oxford Street, Leederville. We co-locate with the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE).


Please note, the Institute and Subiaco Football Club do not have on-site parking:

  • The City of Vincent has a number of car parks throughout Leederville.
  • The closest long term paid parking is available on the south side of The Avenue Car Park on Leederville Parade.
  • Short term paid parking (two hour) is available in adjacent streets.
  • The City of Vincent offers a 'pay by phone' parking service.
  • The Institute is a two minute walk from Leederville train station.
  • Taxis service the site promptly.
  • Cycle racks are located outside Building F.
