Leading a Change Initiative for Aspirant School Leaders

About the program

Leading a Change Initiative for Aspirant School Leaders enables participants to demonstrate their leadership capability as they lead a school based change. This multi-phase program is intended for aspirant school leaders who are at the beginning stages of their leadership journey.

It offers an understanding and skill-development in what is required of educational leaders through a multi-disciplinary approach—incorporating training, skill practice, action research, professional reading and collegial networking. Participants will develop a plan for leading a change initiative aligned to their school’s strategic/operational plan.

The program consists of pre-workshop preparation, attendance at both workshops, group coaching webinars and action planning as outlined below:

Learning intention

  • plan a change initiative in your school that has positive impact on staff development or student learning
  • describe the distinction between the roles and responsibilities of leadership and management, and the significance of both approaches in running and growing schools
  • identify constructive leadership strategies through the use of a psychometric self-assessment tool
  • use a solutions focused model to support strategic planning processes
  • describe the skills and mindset required of an agile leader
  • identify strategies to get ‘buy in’ and empower others utilising a team coaching approach
  • support and receive support from other aspiring leaders with your change initiative through a small professional learning network
  • use the Australian Professional Standard for Principals to align your developing practice as a leader.

Aspirant school leaders will benefit from participating in this program.

Participant expectations

By participating in this program, participants commit to:

  • actively engaging and contributing in all face to face and online activities
  • completing all tasks
  • completing evaluations of the program.

On the day

  • Programs start at 8.30am. Tea and coffee are available from 7.45am.
  • Business dress is required.
  • Morning tea and lunch are provided.
  • Wifi connection is available.


The Institute for Professional Learning is located in Building B at 164-194 Oxford Street, Leederville WA. We co-locate with the Schools of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE).



Please note the Institute does not have on-site parking available:

  • The City of Vincent has a number of car parks throughout Leederville.
  • The closest long term paid parking is available on the south side of The Avenue Car Park on Leederville Parade.
  • Short term paid parking (two hour) is available in adjacent streets.
  • The City of Vincent offers a 'pay by phone' parking service.
  • The Institute is a two minute walk from Leederville train station.
  • Taxis service the site promptly.
  • Cycle racks are located outside Building F at the Institute.
