Job Design and Classification

About the program

This workshop supports school leaders and business leaders to restructure the school workforce to meet school requirements, programs and budgets. It is also relevant to HR practitioners across the Department of Education. Participants will be provided an overview of the:

  • framework for position classification evaluation and review
  • procedures to establish new positions and develop job descriptions
  • central services available to support restructuring activities.

Learning intention

By the end of this workshop, participants will have an understanding of work value and position classification evaluation in the Public Sector and increased their capacity to apply that understanding to workforce restructuring activities at their school or worksite.

Success criteria

As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to develop positions and job descriptions that cater for their particular school or worksite needs, effectively communicate the requirements of the role and attract the right applicants.

Target audience

School leaders, corporate services staff, managers corporate services, regional and central office HR practitioners

About the facilitators

Job Design and Classification is presented by John Rossi, Manager, Workforce Management and Sandy Thompson, Principal Consultant, Workforce Management. This directorate provides a range of strategic human resource functions that support effective and efficient HR policies and practice across the Department of Education.

On the day

  • Morning programs start at 8.30am. (Morning tea is provided)
  • Afternoon programs start at 12.30pm. (Afternoon tea is provided)

  • Tea and coffee are available

  • Business dress is required.


The Institute for Professional Learning is located in Building B at 164-194 Oxford Street, Leederville WA. We co-locate with the Schools of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE).


Please note the Institute does not have on-site parking available:

  • The City of Vincent has a number of car parks throughout Leederville.
  • The closest long term paid parking is available on the south side of The Avenue Car Park on Leederville Parade.
  • Short term paid parking (two hour) is available in adjacent streets.
  • The City of Vincent offers a 'pay by phone' parking service.
  • The Institute is a two minute walk from Leederville train station.
  • Taxis service the site promptly.
  • Cycle racks are located outside Building F at the Institute.
