Institute for Professional Learning support - Graduate Teacher Induction Program

One of the benefits of starting a career in public education is that the Institute for Professional Learning supports you to transition from university to being classroom ready and beyond. The Institute coordinates the Graduate Teacher Induction Program, which has been specifically designed to meet the needs of early career teachers.

The Graduate Teacher Induction Program is designed to:

  • build your capability and skills as an effective classroom teacher
  • enhance your professional practice
  • assist you to gain a deeper understanding of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers
  • assist you to transfer learning from the program to your teaching practice.

The Graduate Teacher Induction Program comprises the:

  • Graduate Teacher Professional Learning Program: Over the first 30 months of teaching, graduate teachers in public schools are required to complete this program, which is designed to build graduates’ skills, effectiveness and confidence. As a graduate teacher employed by the Department of Education, you are required to participate in the Graduate Teacher Professional Learning Program, regardless of your registration category with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia.
  • In-Class Coaching Program: This program provides you with a personalised professional learning experience facilitated by a trained teaching and learning advocate from the Institute. You have the opportunity to reflect on and develop your practice using the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers as a framework. The program complements and builds on the contextualised support provided by your school. Participation in the In-Class Coaching Program is voluntary and through an application-based system.

More information can be found in the downloadable Graduate Teacher Professional Learning Program FAQs and In-Class Coaching Program FAQs.

Professional Learning Information System (PLIS): The Department’s Professional Learning Information System is an online calendar and enrolment system. You can access the Graduate Teacher Professional Learning Program, as well as other professional learning offered by the Institute for Professional Learning, Statewide Services Centre and other directorates.

Ask your mentor or member of the administration team to show you how to access and enrol in programs through PLIS, specifically how to enrol in Graduate Teacher Module 1. Module 1 is generally run during Term 1, with the program content aligning to this stage of your professional practice.
