Application Writing and Interview Skills for Public Servants: Levels 4-6

About the program

This program is designed to provide you with an awareness of current job application techniques when applying for positions within the Western Australian public sector at Levels 4-6.

It is designed to give you an understanding of what is required to effectively address job-related requirements/selection criteria as well as prepare for effective interview performance.    

Learning intention

By the end of the program, it is intended that you will have:

  • identified the key influences impacting on successful career progression through the application process
  • examined application requirements for varying promotional positions
  • explored how to communicate competitiveness through a covering letter and CV
  • explored the required work related requirements/standards/criteria in the context of a position
  • considered effective formats for developing a covering letter and CV
  • explored strategies and techniques for shaping and improving interview performance.

Participant expectations

You are requested to bring your current applications and job descriptions to refer to during the session.

Target audience

Public servants aspiring to positions within the Western Australian public sector at Levels 4-6. 

About the facilitator

Program facilitator, Vanessa HerbertVanessa Herbert has worked as a facilitator, trainer and consultant for the past 25 years in the public and private sectors. This includes working in organisational change, to facilitate team planning, decision-making and review. She is skilled in engaging participants in collaborative work to support them exploring changing and demanding workplace expectations.

With extensive experience training in core competency areas, including leadership, management, strategic and operational planning, curriculum, communications and performance development, Vanessa is able to support participants to develop their capability and capacity to perform skilfully in their roles.

For the past five years, Vanessa has delivered a broad range of customised training developing business writing skills in the public and private sectors. This has ranged from developing corporate executive papers and proposals to ministerial responses.

On the day

  • Programs start at 8.30am. (Institute doors open at 8.00am.)
  • Business dress is required.
  • Morning tea and lunch are provided.


The Leadership Institute is located in Building B at 164-194 Oxford Street, Leederville. We co-locate with the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE).


Please note, the Institute does not have on-site parking:

  • The City of Vincent has a number of car parks throughout Leederville.
  • The closest long term paid parking is available on the south side of The Avenue Car Park on Leederville Parade.
  • Short term paid parking (two hour) is available in adjacent streets.
  • The City of Vincent offers a 'pay by phone' parking service.
  • The Institute is a two minute walk from Leederville train station.
  • Taxis service the site promptly.
  • Cycle racks are located outside Building F.
