Role of the Institute for Professional Learning

The Institute for Professional Learning is committed to providing high quality teaching and leadership support for Department of Education staff, schools and networks across Western Australia.

We recognise that the roles of those who work in and with our schools are broad and increasingly challenging.  The skills, understandings, knowledge and capabilities required to work effectively within Western Australian public schools are reflected in our high quality programs.

Our programs are aligned to, and support, the strategic directions and initiatives of the Department of Education with a focus on building the leadership capability of key staff to meet the continuing challenges of ongoing school improvement and provide better learning opportunities for students.

Our program design, content and delivery is research and evidence based, following adult learning principles that enable participants to contextualise their learning, reflect on their current practices, plan applications and analyse impacts. We use qualitative evaluation to continuously inform our program design and ensure that the Institute remains responsive to the needs of all staff.

Most importantly, we provide the opportunities for participants to connect and collaborate with experts, school-based practitioners and colleagues across our system.

Our commitment

We understand our public schools are complex and dynamic.

The Institute supports the Department of Education’s innovation and reform agenda by providing access to professional learning that is responsive to the diverse requirements of schools, regions, professional support networks and learning communities.

We provide professional learning to strengthen school leadership and teacher effectiveness to ensure high quality school education for every child.

We are committed to a ‘high performance–high care’ culture focused on ensuring Western Australia public school staff are provided with exemplary professional learning opportunities to best meet the needs of our students.

We strive to be the professional learning provider of choice for Western Australian public school staff.

The Institute operates as a partial-cost recovery service for Department staff, providing contextualised professional learning not able to be offered by commercial providers. The Institute communicates directly with its clients to keep them informed of the professional learning opportunities designed for them.

A focus in 2018 is to increase access to the Institute's programs and services for staff outside of Perth, either through regional presentations, WebEx delivery or a combination of both.

In 2017, more than 4400 participants took part in the Institute's school leader programs. Feedback indicates they have been highly effective in supporting schools implement whole school improvement.

If you have a specific need in your school or region, don't hesitate to contact us.

I look forward to meeting and working with you throughout 2018.
