Assistive Technology Education Service

The Assistive Technology Education Service (ATES) provides effective consultancy support and information services to schools to assess their assistive technology needs.

What is Assistive Technology?

A common definition of assistive technology (AT) is:  "any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially or off the shelf, modified or customised, that increases, maintains or improves functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities".  (Assistance of individuals with Disabilities Act - US, 1988)

While the range of high technology continues to increase and many high technology solutions are possible, the introduction of technology should be progressive and practical. For the student, the introduction of technology should be one of progress and achievement, based on realistic expectations and designed to avoid set backs and disappointment. Often the introduction of "low technology " solutions are more effective and sustainable in the classroom.
