Sustainability Action Planning

St Mary’s AGS first heard about the Sustainable Schools Initiative WA through the Australian Association for Environmental Educators in Bunbury in 2006. Staff who attended the conference felt it was important for the school to become involved and after approaching the Principal, interested staff began meeting.

Three staff members attended the AuSSI-WA workshop in 2007 and the projects have been moving steadily forward. The school had already established some environmental projects, but had not been working in a focused or coordinated way towards Education for Sustainability. A ‘Sustainability Focus Group’ has now been established and we meet regularly (usually twice per term) since it began.

The Sustainability Focus group has used some of the AuSSI-WA toolkit to work out where the school is at in terms of becoming a ‘sustainable school’. The main role of this group is to keep the momentum going and to communicate and document what is happening within the school in regards to Education for Sustainability projects.
