Activity

A new program has been designed to integrate the ‘Sustainable Schools’ focus into the Library program in order to engage students in sustainability. This program supports students to develop their understanding of sustainability and plan for how they could make their school more sustainable.

The learning program has a clear focus that links to our school vision and was designed to give the students a real-life purpose and context for investigating the concept of sustainability.

Guest speaker Dr. Bill Castelden (organised by the local Rotary Club) was also the catalyst for our Principal switching the school over to ‘Green Power’ (Renewable Power), making East Narrogin Primary the first school in the Wheatbelt to receive additional Department of Education and Training funding for this purpose.

Students were very proud to see that kind of leadership in moving the school community towards sustainability.
Our Year 1/2’s are now our ‘Electricity Detectives’, supporting the aim of reducing the school’s power bill down to the amount it was prior to us getting the extra funding for renewable power. These excellent ‘detectives’ have worked out where we need sensor lights within the school and are going to be writing an appropriate Retrofit Grant application. Students will also be working with the electrician to identify the type of sensors that should be purchased.
