Teaching and Learning

The Aluminium Can Recycling and The Waste Shed projects have been established along with the new campus.

The broad aim is to create a more integrated approach to Education for Sustainability (EfS) which provides an ideal means to support student-centred, collaborative learning. These projects are a part of a wider EfS program which includes projects such as:

  • Establishing native gardens within the new school grounds
  • Adopting the Western Swamp Tortoise and Orang-utan
  • Individual class herb/vegetable gardens
  • Becoming a ‘Sun Smart’ school
  • Adopting a ‘Healthy Eating’ plan within the school’s Sustainability Policy
  • Establishing ‘Waste Free’ lunch days
  • Establishing a whole-school recycling program
  • Becoming a ‘Waterwise’ school
  • Working with the Cockburn Wetlands Centre

The school’s Sustainability Coordinator put together two key resources to assist with these two projects.

The first was a Recycling Directory showing the drop off points for different materials throughout Perth, and the Directory has been distributed to all families at the school.

The second resource was the Materials List for the Waste Wise Shed so that reusable materials could be used by staff and students in class projects.

Professional development

  • Visit to the Canning Vale Resource Recovery Centre (staff and students)
  • Series of Waste Wise Schools Program workshops
  • Sustainable Schools Initiative WA – ‘Making the Connections’ workshop series plus whole staff workshop (as part of the follow-up process)
  • Attending presentations by visiting experts including Dr. David Suzuki
