Activity

During Term 2 of 2007 a whole school ‘lapathon’ was held to raise funds for ‘Wheelchairs for Kids Inc’. The aim was to raise $5000 to pay for the construction of 50 wheelchairs for needy children in developing countries. We surpassed our goal, raising $5600.

We also held an appeal to collect 50 knitted knee rugs and knitted toys to be sent with the wheelchairs. There was great support for this project and finally 110 rugs and 30 knitted toys were produced.

There were regular updates on the project at all assemblies, in newsletters and the ‘Envirowatch’ student newspaper. A display about the project was also set up on the school Sustainability Board to help the project maintain a high profile. Rugs that had been completed were put on display and these created great interest amongst both students and parents.

We did not give rewards for the funds that were raised by individual students but encouraged them in their efforts. A big celebration took place during a parent assembly when the over-sized cheque for $5600 and all the knitted items were presented to ‘Wheelchairs for Kids’ and the story was reported in the local Melville Times newspaper.

Bagging the rugs, keeping a record of who made them and printing thank you notes for those who supported the project was time consuming, though parent members of the Sustainability Committee were a great help.

The school plans to keep the rug appeal continuous so that rugs that are completed are stockpiled then presented next year at another celebration assembly. We will also conduct another ‘lapathon’ in 2009 to raise funds for more wheelchairs.
