Sustainability Action Planning

Staff at Dawson Park Primary support a whole-school approach to education for sustainability consistent with the underlying principles of the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI) – the Yongar Reserve project is one significant whole-school activity that reflects this.

A strategic plan was developed to revegetate and rehabilitate Crumpet Creek wetlands, including the gathering of information and technical expertise.

Enthusiastic and passionate staff have been instrumental in forming partnerships with community organisations and experts from other government departments and non-government organisations contributing to student opportunities for community-based experiences and volunteer activities. Community partners include Department of Environment & Conservation (Indigenous Heritage Unit; AirWatch), FOTE, Friends of Yongar Reserve and the Department of Agriculture.

The school has now established continuous learning for sustainability educational pathways for students, strengthened collegiate ties between a number of primary and high schools and established partnerships of cluster schools (Forrestfield and Bibra Lake) that can be expanded for future projects.

In 2007 our submission entitled Partnerships & Sustainability - A Key Context for Learning: resource rich, meaningful, critical earned the school finalist status in the Premier’s Awards.

The developed school Sustainability Policy and Sustainable Energy Policy supports whole school planning.

A five year Sustainability Plan is now in place encompassing key learning areas and requiring teacher accountability. All projects are reviewed and success is determined by learning outcome achievement in addition to progress achieved for environmental, social and cultural sustainability.
