General religious education

School activities based on religious, spiritual or moral values

The Act also provides for principals, in consultation with the school council/board, to determine whether, and which, prayers, songs and other materials based on religious, spiritual or moral values in school activities such as assemblies, will be included as part of the general religious education that is provided to students.

As parents have the right to withdraw their children from these activities, it is reasonable to ask that schools provide timely information so that parents can make an informed decision about their child’s participation.

In all cases, the assumption is that students will participate unless parents give written notice of their desire to withdraw their children.
