A-E Exemplars

This website contains annotated samples of student work that have been collected by teachers from a range of public schools. Student work samples are currently available for Languages, the Arts and Technologies and Enterprise learning areas. The A-E Exemplars will be available for teacher use until the Western Australian Curriculum in these learning areas is fully implemented.

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority has developed the Judging standards tool to support teachers when reporting against the Achievement Standards; when giving assessment feedback; and when explaining the differences between one student's achievement and another's. Teachers can access the Judging standards tool on the School Curriculum and Standards Authority website for English; Health and Physical Education; Humanities and Social Sciences; Mathematics; Science and Technologies.

The samples exemplify standards associated with the Department of Education's Semester 2 grades. They have been developed to assist teachers, parents, carers and other stakeholders to become familiar with these standards.

The individual samples included in this resource illustrate what students know, understand and are able to do in relation to some aspects of the standard. In practice, when allocating a grade, teachers draw upon evidence from a much wider range of information than that obtained in a single test or task. It is important to note that the included samples reflect only a small component of the content taught and assessed within the classroom. A range of factors, including the length and depth of some types of assessment undertaken by students and copyright laws and regulations have prevented other types of samples being included. Public school teachers have access to a more extensive range of annotated student work samples.

Practising teachers have been engaged in the development of the annotated samples. In so doing, they used their professional knowledge, experience and available resources to make judgements and decisions about which aspects of the standards are shown in the work sample; they then annotated them accordingly. Evidence of standards associated with the grade that best matches the student's work has been highlighted within each annotated sample.

Many of the student work samples included in this resource are first draft and written under a range of conditions (eg test conditions). As such, some samples may include spelling and grammatical errors, and subject specific vocabulary.

In practice, teachers will pick up on aspects of student work, such as these, to assist them to develop appropriate programs for their students.

The Department acknowledges and appreciates the work of the practising teachers across Western Australian public schools who contributed to the development of this resource.
