In-school mentors

Benefits

Research shows that early career teachers benefit immensely from the opportunity to engage with a mentor to ensure they are developing their practice cohesive to the Department’s and the school’s strategic direction.

Practice-focused mentoring is particularly powerful in supporting the transition of a teacher from the graduate to proficient career stage.

All mentoring programs differ between schools and the school should adopt its own mentoring policy as part of their support for early career teachers.

The difference between mentoring and coaching

There are differences between mentoring and coaching. Both roles are significant in the growth of an early career teacher. The mentor shares expertise and offers in-context solutions, while the coach focuses on self-reflection.

Recommended pathway to Full Registration

The Department’s recommended pathway to Full Registration identifies that graduate teachers access both an in-school mentor and an in-class coach. Accessing both support mechanisms provide a graduate teacher with the best possible support to begin their career.

Professional learning

Statewide Services provides support for in-school mentors through the Mentoring Graduate Teachers Program.

The Mentoring Graduate Teachers Program is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of staff and enable them to approach their role as a graduate teacher mentor with confidence, commitment and enthusiasm. Experienced staff are encouraged to complete the one day program to develop the necessary skills and knowledge required to mentor graduate teachers and provide them with in- school support.

Register for the Mentoring Graduate Teachers Program on PLIS.

Practice-focused mentoring

To ensure high-quality mentoring is occurring in induction, it is important to know what practice-focused mentoring is and isn’t.
