What is it?
Asia Literacy is the Department of Education's strategy to enhance the knowledge, skills and understandings
about the histories, geographies, societies, cultures, literature and languages of the diverse countries that make up our
region. Asia Literacy is a core part of the Australian curriculum and assists young Australians to make sense of
the part of the world in which they live.
The Department, through the Asia Literacy program, aims to support all public schools in Western Australia to:
-
Implement the Australian Curriculum with reference to the general capabilities and Asia priority of Asia and Australia's
engagement with Asia
-
Incorporate studies of Asia across learning areas and Year levels as a cross curriculum priority
-
Incorporate studies of Asia which support Asian languages programs and transition pathways
-
Increase empathy, knowledge and understanding about the peoples and countries of Asia amongst teachers and students
-
Provide students with sequenced and sustained understandings of the region within an Australian context
-
Move towards an Asia-engaged school with formal, whole-school commitment to implementing the learning phases described
in the National
Statement
-
Engage in professional learning and discussion within school networks and Education Regions to support studies of Asia and
Asian language programs.
Asia literacy has a state advisor and works
in partnership with the Asia Education Foundation.
