Are you a mandatory reporter?


Who is a mandatory reporter?

All doctors, nurses, midwives, police, teachers and boarding supervisors who form a belief that child sexual abuse has occurred or is occurring, during the course of paid or unpaid work are mandatory reporters.

For the purposes of the legislation, ‘teacher’ is defined as any person registered with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA) or with provisional registration or who has a limited authority to teach and are working as a teacher.

TAFEWA lecturers with TRBWA registration or a limited authority to teach who deliver an educational program on a school site or in a TAFEWA college are mandatory reporters.

When am I a mandatory reporter?

If you are a teacher or boarding supervisor, you are only a mandatory reporter when working in a paid or unpaid capacity as a teacher or boarding supervisor.  

Mandatory reporters include:

  • Doctors
  • Nurses and midwives
  • Police officers
  • Teachers
  • Boarding supervisors

All staff registered with TRBWA, including:

  • Principals
  • Deputies
  • Heads of learning areas
  • Classroom teachers
  • Community kindergaten teachers
  • Visiting teachers
  • Specialist teachers
  • Staff with a limited authority to teach
  • TAFE staff with a limited authority to teach on a school site or in a TAFEWA college under the School Education Act 1999 

Even if you are registered with TRBWA you are not a mandatory reporter unless you are working as a teacher.
