Leap training program

The Department is offering qualified teachers the opportunity to participate in funded training programs tailored to support:

  • Primary teachers to teach in secondary subject areas of need: science, mathematics and design and technology.
  • Secondary teachers to teach in an additional specialist learning areas. Currently mathematics, science and design & technology.
  • Lower secondary science teachers to teach upper secondary physics, chemistry and mathematics.
  • Teachers with languages experience to teach primary languages.

Courses on offer

Lower secondary Design and Technology Graduate Certificate University enrolment commencing from December this year for semester one, 2019.
Lower secondary Science Graduate Certificate University enrolment commencing from December this year for semester one, 2019.
Lower secondary Mathematics Graduate Certificate University enrolment commencing from December this year for semester one, 2019.
Lower secondary English Short Course Course date in 2019 to be confirmed
Primary Languages Short Course Course commencing during Term 1, 2019.
Upper secondary Years 11 & 12 Mathematics - Methods Short Course Course date in 2019 to be confirmed
Upper secondary Years 11 & 12 Mathematics - Specialist Short Course Course date in 2019 to be confirmed
Upper secondary Years 11 & 12 Physics Short Course To be held in semester two, 2019. Exact dates to be confirmed.
Upper secondary Years 11 & 12 Chemistry Short Course To be held in semester two, 2019. Exact dates to be confirmed.

Expressions of Interest are currently being accepted.  You will be contacted shortly after you apply to confirm your participation.  Participation is dependent on the endorsement of the applicant's Principal and/or Head of Learning Area.

Training is delivered by highly qualified specialist providers and focus on content knowledge and practical skills.

The Department will fund travel and accommodation for country participants and will meet university fees and book costs for all participants.

Graduates and relief teachers can apply to participate.

Additional information for applicants and principals

Funding arrangements

Funding to support teachers complete training is paid automatically as an operational response allocation to schools following the completion of training. There is no need for principals to apply.

Relief is provided to attend university units or short courses.  Further information will be sent directly to participants.

Teachers completing the Graduate Certificates also complete 10 days of school-based professional learning to complement their content training.  Funding will be forwarded directly to schools.

Which costs are covered?

Universities and training providers invoice the Department directly for course fees for all participants. Costs of any essential course materials purchased by the participants, such as texts, will be reimbursed, and in some instances purchased directly.

What is the process for travel and accommodation for teachers in the country?

Some teachers may be required to travel to Perth for training.  Travel and accommodation costs are met by the Department.  All motor vehicle allowance claims are completed by Department teachers in HRMIS using the cost centre (56350) and project code (1420).

Where and when should a teacher complete their online study?

Where teachers are studying online, principals are responsible for determining whether online study is completed at school or teachers are released to study at home, the library or university.
