Reimbursement for Working with Children Check

You are required by law to apply for a Working with Children Check (WWCC) to be able to work with children in Western Australia.

Reimbursements for eligible staff are processed within four to six weeks through our WWCC recording system in conjunction with your regular fortnightly pay.

Subsidies for Glasses and Lenses

You may be eligible to claim a subsidy for the cost of purchasing optical aids such as glasses and contact lenses. Eligible staff receive 50 per cent of their out-of-pocket expenses up to $220.

You are eligible if you:

  • are a permanent staff member or have worked for the Department for a least 12 months
  • use a computer for at least one hour a day continuously or more than 10 hours a week
  • have certification that optical aids are necessary for computer work.

To claim, just complete the optical aids subsidy form.

Salary Packaging

What is it?

Salary packaging is an effective way to reduce your taxable income and the amount of tax you pay, by paying for some items or services you use straight out of your pre-tax salary. 

What can you salary package?

You can salary package a lot more than you think and can receive your salary as a combination of cash and benefits:

  • Superannuation contributions
  • Remote area housing benefits
  • Laptops, tablets & mobile phones*
  • Otherwise deductible items including:

                        +Self-education expenses that are consistent with Australian Taxation Office rulings*
                        +Financial products – e.g. disability and income protection insurance
                        +Financial counselling (related to salary packaging)
                        +Uniforms
                        +Professional membership and subscriptions
                        +Home office expenses*

* Must be work-related

The Australian Securities & Investments Commission ‘s  Money Smart website provides free and impartial financial guidance and tools that may also be useful to employees considering salary packaging.

 

Deferred Salary Scheme

You may be eligible for the scheme which enables you to have a year off with pay. Over a four year period you receive 80 per cent of your salary which then entitles you to a fifth year of paid leave at 80 per cent of your salary.

Every application is assessed based on merit and gives consideration to your personal circumstances.

Health and wellbeing

We are committed to providing a supportive and safe work environment.

You have access to a full range of support services in the areas of occupational safety and health, employee wellbeing and workers' compensation.

You can access:

  • counselling, (employee assistance program) an independent and confidential service for you and your immediate family members for six free sessions each year
  • mediation, to help you manage conflict in the workplace
  • workers' compensation assistance if you are injured at work
  • rehabilitation assistance support for managing your injury and helping you to return to work
  • ergonomic and worksites assessments to prevent and manage injuries
  • occupational health and safety information and training.

Notebook for teachers program

Full-time and part-time teachers and school psychologists can take advantage of the subsidised lease arrangements for Notebook computers. Each Notebook computer comes with software, introductory training, insurance and support for work and personal use for three years.

Your contribution towards the cost of the notebook is salary packaged and varies depending on the model you select.

If you work directly with students and are permanent or have been our contract for 12 months or more with the Department, you are eligible. The program is also open to principals and deputy principals working in schools, and school psychologists.
