Applying for a school leadership position

School leadership positions in WA public schools include:

  • head of learning area (secondary schools)
  • program coordinator
  • deputy principal
  • associate principal
  • principal
  • executive principal.

Further information about school leadership positions in WA public schools can be found here.

Regional Executive Directors are responsible for the appointment of principals.  In the case of Independent Public Schools, the Director General has this responsibility.

Principals have the same eligibility requirements as teachers.

There are a number of ways to apply for a principal position:

1.  Apply directly to advertised vacancies

Permanent principal positions are advertised on Jobs WA and filled via a merit selection process.  Fixed term principal positions may also be advertised on Jobs WA and filled via a merit selection process.

2. Fixed Term Principal Appointment Pool

A fixed term principal appointment pool for short term positions (usually up to 6 months) is also now in place.  The pool is ongoing and qualified teachers and administrators can apply at any time.  Applicants are required to select the individual schools they wish to be considered for, and can use the Principal Classification Identifier to assist with selecting schools.  Individual pools have been established for level 3, 4, 5 and 6 principal vacancies and are advertised on Jobs WA.

Level 3 Fixed Term Principal Appointment Pool

Level 4 Fixed Term Principal Appointment Pool

Level 5 Fixed Term Principal Appointment Pool

Level 6 Fixed Term Principal Appointment Pool

3.  Submit an expression of interest

Some fixed term principal positions are filled via an Expression of Interest process which is advertised on the Department's internaljobs board (located on the portal).  Only employees of the Department of Education WA may apply for these positions and appointments cannot be made on a permanent basis.

4.  Education Region Aspirant Pool

Some Education Regions advertise and create a region based aspirant pool. Principal vacancies that arise during the year in schools in that particular region may be filled via the pool.  Not all Education Regions create an aspirant pool.  Pools are advertised on Jobs WA.

Applicants can use the Principal Classification Identifier to assist with selecting schools.
