Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

Aboriginal Education uses the decision made by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Social Justice and Race Discrimination Commissioner Mr Tom Calma (in consultation with key Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups) that the words 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander' be used instead of Indigenous.

Aboriginal Education will use the word Aboriginal and should be taken to mean Aboriginal, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and Indigenous.

The acronym 'ATSI' should not be used to describe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status

An Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person is one who:

  • is of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent;
  • identifies as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person; and
  • is accepted as such by the community in which s/he lives or has lived.
